THE ANCIENT ART OF MOSAICS
Interested in doing something special during your holidays in Greece? Attend a one-day mosaic art workshop conducted with a fluent English speaking female instructor and make your own mosaic souvenir!
THE LOCATION
Mosaics artist, Dimitra Colomvakou was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario Canada. For the last 20 years Dimitra has lived in the small village of Xirokambi, Sparta in the southern Peloponnese.
The village of Xirokambi is situated at the base of Mt.Taygetos and only 5 minutes from the workshop is the main square offering tavernas and cafes. WORKSHOP # 1 – STONE MOSAIC WORKSHOP
AIM: This 4 hour mosaic workshop will enable the participants to acquire a basic knowledge of mosaic making. Participants will create a mosaic of their own, which will be made within the allotted time to take home to enjoy. Grab the chance to experience this ancient art form!
THE DEMONSTRATION: The “direct method” will be used with no grout . There will be a variety of Greek and Roman geometric patterns to choose from or you can design your own pattern. Each participant will learn the use of tweezers with broken stone and the use of adhesive, colouring tints.
The history of mosaics and everything discussed and demonstrated in the workshop, will be written and sent by email. Each participant will learn the basic techniques of making a mosaic regarding bases, glues, different types of tessarae, grouts. Time permitting a demonstration of other mosaic techniques with different tessarae will be demonstrated.

WORKSHOP #2 – GLASS MOSAIC WORKSHOP
AIM: This 4 hour mosaic workshop will enable the participants to acquire a basic knowledge of mosaic making. Participants will create a mosaic of their own, which will be made within the allotted time to take home to enjoy.
THE DEMONSTRATION: The “direct method” will be used to apply the tessaarae. Participants will learn to cut their tessarae with special nippers, glue on their base and then grout their art piece. There will be a variety of patterns to choose from or you can design your own pattern. For this technique, there will be a small break so that the glue can dry and we can grout later.

WORKSHOP #3 – CHILDRENS MOSAIC WORKSHOP WITH BEANS or GLASS
AIM: This 1 hour workshop will enable the children to learn about mosaics as they create a mosaic using dry beans and other legumes. Participants will create a mosaic of their own, which will be made within the allotted time to take home to enjoy.
THE DEMONSTRATION: The “direct method” will be used to apply the beans. Simple figures will be drawn on cardboard, then painting glue in a small portion of the design and placing different colour beans to result in a quite beautiful piece of mosaic art children will be proud to display.
