Women of Paris Walks – The first Paris walking tour devoted entirely to Women’s History and Influence.

Hello! I’m Heidi – Paris tour guide and creator of the Women of Paris Walks. I made the move over to Paris from London in search of a new adventure in the French capital where I began guiding. Through guiding my love for Paris blossomed; I developed a fascination for all things French and a genuine joy for what I was doing.

I was inspired to create the Essential Women of Paris walk when I realised that this is a grossly neglected topic in Paris tourism. Typical tours of the city are dominated by great men (Napoleon, Louis XIV, Victor Hugo etc.) and often don’t include much reference to great women. Or, if they do mention women, it is often in a negative light.

After realising this and feeling disheartened I decided to make a change and create something relevant for our time – an evolving world in which patriarchal history is being challenged. As soon as I began researching, I was amazed by the rich diversity of names I was coming across, from Josephine Baker to Marie Curie.

I hope that this tour will reveal a new side to Paris, already such a beloved city, and I hope that it will enrich Paris tourism by creating an awareness of some of the incredible women who have impacted the city.

Let’s consider the facts: France has never had a female monarch or president. Women didn’t get the vote here until much later than many of France’s European counterparts. This is the capital city of a country that has been ruled by men and its history largely dictated by a male voice.

The women we do hear about are very often wives, mistresses or muses to great kings, writers or artists. Throughout history, women have very often been sexualised, objectified, but not all that frequently recognised for their own achievements.

In the past, Paris has been likened to a female muse, inspiring the many great male artists and writers who made their names here. But what about the women who lived here? What was Paris for them? Isn’t it time we heard their voices too?

This tour reveals the lesser-told side of the city’s history; one dominated not by great men but by inspirational women, who persevered within a bastion of patriarchy to make their mark on Paris, and the world.

    Finally a Women History Tour!!!!

    5/ 5

I love going on tours whenever I travel. I find they are the best way to explore a new city! One thing they tend to always lack are female voices that are not cast in a bad light. I was so happy when I came across this tour while in Paris! The meeting point is in front of a beautiful church that many people will know from Midnight in Paris. Heidi is an excellent tour guide with lots of knowledge about the females she discusses on the tour. Also, you might get lucky and be accompanied by her cutie dog! As you make your way through the tour you come across areas that are well- known as well as new unique places. I am an avid reader and love the bookstore Shakespeare&Co. I was so surprised when I learned where the original location was and the history of the store. Overall, I would recommend this tour to anyone coming to Paris both female and male! You leave it feeling very empowered and with a new sense of knowledge.

Women of Paris is exactly what I’ve been looking for!

    5/ 5

I recently went on a Women of Paris walking tour and it couldn’t have been a better experience. Heidi is incredibly knowledgable and gives us a peek into the lives, actions, and lasting impact of the women who helped shape the Paris we know today in a fun, light yet completely absorbing manner. By the end of the tour, I was ready to book my next. I cannot recommend this walking tour more highly.

Fun, engaging and very necessary! A great way to see Paris from a new perspective

    5/ 5

I’m a Brit living in Paris and did the Essential tour as a way to learn more about the city. I loved hearing about such a diverse group of women who have shaped its history and it was also a good excuse to visit some beautiful parts of the Left Bank that I tend not to hang out in. Heidi is a great guide – open, friendly, entertaining and really tells a story about the women she features rather just listing off some facts. I felt really inspired by the end of it!
